Serbian Military Mounts Offensive against Several Villages in Deçan Area
PRISHTINA, Aug 9 (KIC) - Serbian military
and police troops launched at 9:30 o'clock today (Sunday) a fierce offensive
against the villages of Llukë e Epërme, Carrabreg i Poshtëm,
Beleg, Prejlep, Rastavicë, Baballoq and Gramaqel, the LDK Information
Commission in Deçan reported.
Today's is amongst the fiercest Serb attacks
in Deçan area, and the casualty toll is feared high, observers said.
In the morning hours some 110 military vehicles with heavy armament arrived
in the area, LDK sources said. The Albanian villages are being shelled
with all kinds of weapons, including tanks and high-caliber cannons. The
sound of heavy blasts and artillery rounds can be heard from a considerable
distance, local sources said.
Besides being targeted by long range shelling,
the villages are being attacked by Serb infantry units, too, which are
trying to advance into the area. Local Albanian forces, including the UÇK,
have been putting up resistance.
Excepting Carrabregu i Poshtëm and parts
of Prejlep, the local population had returned a few days earlier to these
villages. They had to flee the area under attack for a second time. Serbian
forces opened fire on the fleeing population, mostly women and children.
There are feared dead amongst them, local sources said.
Meanwhile, LDK sources in Gjakova said the village
of Junik was attacked last night and today by Serb forces.

said the Albanians had been "slaughtered", but did not offer details as
to how they were killed.
The four bodies were taken yesterday to the Gjakova
town morgue initially, to be then transferred to the Peja hospital morgue.
Several hundred Albanians have been trapped in
the town of Deçan in the wake of the Serbian offensive against the
town and the outlying area in late May and early June.
(See related story below)

Serbian Attacks in Gjakova Area Continue
PRISHTINA, Aug 9 (KIC) - Serbian attacks against
the villages of Dujakë, Plançor and Hereç, which are

local sources said.
Last night and today, Serbian attacks continued
against the villages of the Reka e Keqe region and Junik, the LDK Information
Commission in Gjakova reported.
Meanwhile, Serbian military and police forces
attacked yesterday (Saturday) afternoon the village of Vraniq in the municipality

Houses of Two Family Compounds Levelled to the Ground in Llaushë
PRISHTINA, Aug 9 (KIC) - Eye-witness accounts
said the houses of two huge Albanian family compounds, Geci and Vojvoda,
were burned or destroyed completely during the Serb onslaught on the village
earlier this week. The fate of some 500-600 Albanians, reported holed up

PRISHTINA, Aug 9 (KIC) - On Friday evening, Serbian
special units paraded through the town center of Istog in four vans with
UÇK license plates and wearing UÇK patches.
Meanwhile, local sources said Serb police opened
fire on two Albanian houses in the village of Cerkolez on 3 August.
There was material damage, smashed windows, in
the houses of Smajl and Hajdar Arifaj, but no casualties.
The two families evacuated their homes for security
concerns.

Ismet Elezi was held in custody for three days,
Islam Demaku for seven hours, whereas Besim Demaku had his ID seized and
was ordered to report back on Monday.
They were all interrogated about the UÇK
and political issues.
The Serb regime is apparently keen on intimidating
Albanians, preventing them from getting back home.
While all this happens, the Serb regime spreads
leaflets calling for citizens to return to their deserted homes.

Prishtina, 8 August (ARTA) 1600CET--
The British ambassador to Belgrade, Brian Donelly,
handed "The Viewpoints of the Contact Group" to the representatives of
"FRY" Government in Belgrade. On Saturday, he gave Rugova the "offer" whose
contents are unknown yet for the public. The text of the Contact Group
is referred to as a document that "will help the parties sit and dialogue".
"I came to hand Rugova a draft-document of the
Contact Group, which has posed various ideas of how the problems in Kosova
could be solved", stated the British Ambassador.
"We hope that both parties will observe this
document (idea), which will help them to resume the talks. And we think
they have to start talking, by all means" declared Donelly after leaving
the Rugova’s premises in Prishtina.
"Quitting the mutual hostilities and the fighting,
the return of the displaced to their homes are the actual priorities" said
he.
"The Serb authorities have promised this, we
hope this will become a reality. The International Community is on its
way to help on its realization," said Donelly additionally.
The British ambassador said that "…an immediate
priority is to insure safety, and this is something that would enable the
negotiations. We think that only a solution through negotiations is possible,
and this has to be achieved in circumstances of no war.
The war must stop, and the sooner it happens,
the sooner the parties will start conversations".
The representatives of "FRY" in Belgrade evaluated
the "offer" of Contact Group as positive and, among other things, it was
stated that "it expresses the clear and unified attitude that the separatist
ideas and that of Republic of Kosova have to be recalled". On the other
hand, there was no immediate comment to the "offer" by Rugova.

municipal village Vraniq
Gjakovë, 8 August (ARTA) 1800CET--

population of the village fled their houses and evacuated to some safer
places.
Fighting happened yesterday also in the villages
of Rekë e Keqe, especially in the border belt from Koshare village
through the surroundings of Junik, state Albanian sources. The same sources
have confirmed the news about the KLA positions being replaced.
Serb military forces fired missiles, yesterday
afternoon, over the villages Ramoc and Sheremet, as soon as the once displaced
population returned to their homes. The new shelling forced the people
to leave the village and find shelter in Gjakovë.
KOSOVA (clashes – Klinë)
The fighting still continues
Klinë, 8 August (ARTA) 1950CET --
Last night between 2200CET and 0200CET, severe
fighting took place between Serb military and police forces situated in
Grapc and Bingjë villages, and KLA forces from villages Ranoc, Leskoc
and Kosh. During these clashes, many houses were destroyed while there
is no confirmation about the killed and the wounded. Because of the battles,
Albanian local population moved from their villages into some safer areas,
Albanian sources inform.
In Klinë, the Serb policemen and civilians
have raided 12 Albanian flats. Some of the flat owners have come back from
Ulqin, Prishtina and other places where have been temporarily settled.
They have evicted the Serbs that had usurped their flats and settled in.
Around 32 villages have been burnt and shelled
in the course of recent Serb offensive over Klinë municipal villages;
11 Albanians (mainly women and elderly) were killed; dozens of them were
wounded; the number of the abducted people is quite big.

men, three Laci families, three old men from Çabiq and one Albanian
from Ujëmirë, who have been recently arrested by the Serb police.
KOSOVA (shelling – Shtime)
Shelling continue in the Shtime municipality

The villages Godanc i Epërm, Luzhak and
Jezerc were shelled last night at 2100CET. an Albanian local that was badly
wounded in the shelling of the village of Petrovë, died yesterday
because of the serious wounded he was inflicted.
The Serb police and military, situated in Pishat
(near Kryqi i Belincës), Kodra e Gështenjave and Zborc village
are persistently shelling the villages Pjetërshticë, Krojmir,
Carralevë, Petrovë, Luzhak and Godanc i Epërm. The village
Godanc i Epërm was shelled yesterday by Serb Military situated at
Pishat. The houses of Avdi Veseli, Asllan Hasani, Imer and Mustafë
Ramadani were damaged from the grenades.
These people luckily escaped the tragedy as they
weren’t home when their houses were shelled.
According to eyewitnesses, during the Serb offensive
on Carralevë, the Serb military has brutally mutilated Feriz Sabit
Xhema (40), while his brother Ramiz (45) was killed inside the village.
Both these victims were mentally retarded, witnesses say. The population
of these villages was moved to some safer places.
KOSOVA (shelling – Prizren)
Renewed shelling
Prizren, 8 August (ARTA) 1830CET--
Prizren municipal villages were shelled again
from the Serb Army barracks in Prizren, while the villages of Vërrin
area were shelled yesterday with heavy artillery from a new make-shift
military and police base in Factory "Farmakos" in Prizren. There is still
no record on the eventual victims or material damages.
Notwithstanding, the situation in Prizren and
its vicinity is significantly become tenser, and is characterized with
arrests of local activists of political and nonpolitical Albanian subjects.
Yesterday, the Serb police arrested Ruzhdi Berisha
an MP of the Kosovar Parliament, when he was going back home with his family
in Buçe village. The police mistreated him and he was released afterwards,
today in the morning.
Over 300 people were arrested in Prizren and
its surroundings within one month. Seventy-four out of them are being kept
in custody and accused of "terrorism". The local CDFRF informs in the past
couple of months 9 civilians from Prizren municipality were killed, while
currently the flux of the escapees from Rahovec and Malishevë has
overwhelmed the city. People from Prizren suburbs "Tusus" and "Bajram Curri"
neighboring to Vërrin, which has become target of the Serb military
and police shelling, have been added to the long list of IDPs displaced
to Prizren proper.
KOSOVA (burning – Drenica)
The Serb Police burnt houses in Polac
Skënderaj, 8 August (ARTA) 2030CET--
The Serb forces have started to torch the houses
of Polac village even with lighters, Murat Musliu, chairman of local CDHRF
in Skënderaj, stated to KIC today. He declared that the Serb policemen
have stationed in the local school building, while the village is full
of Serb snipers who shoot at every movement.
KOSOVA (possible executions – Drenica)
The locals from Llaushë are taken to
Deviç Monastery for execution
Skënderaj, 8 August (ARTA) 2000CET--
An information of LDSH (Albanian Democratic Movement),
grounded on field sources states that the Serb police and military forces
continue to burn the Skënderaj municipal villages. After continuously
having shelled Polac, the Serb police started plundering the local houses
and burning them afterward, one by one.
There is still no information about what happened
with a large number of Llaushë residents, who couldn't escape before
the Serb police entered the village. According to local sources, the Serb
police are sending local people to Deviç Monastery for execution.
The conditions of the escapees who are still
staying in the forests are catastrophic. They are lacking food, clothing,
medicines and medical treatment, states the information issued by the LDSH.
Furthermore, "the people that have escaped in the forests are appealing
for assistance of the humanitarian organizations, in order to prevent the
catastrophe".
REMARK: Please read mails from Decani Monastery below.
I don't believe the monastery is involved - and hope, mentioning
the Deviç Monastery is only to locate people were brought to.
(Sorry if my english is not good.)
KOSOVA (evacuation – Drenica)
The ICRC brought 55 persons from Tushilë
Mitrovicë, 8 August (ARTA) 1900CET--
Mitrovicë is still in focus of IDPs arriving
from the Drenica villages that are being shelled by the Serb police and
military forces.
According to an official communiqué issued
today by "Mother Teresa Association" in Mitrovicë, more than 40.000
people have found shelter in this municipality. The Association has registered
21.272 IDPs and the teams are evidencing others who are sheltered in Mitrovicë.
Mitrovicë has hosted displaced from 52 villages of Skënderaj,
Malishevë, Klinë e Begut, Gllogoc, Suharekë, Vushtrri, Sheshi
i Vjetër as well as from Tuneli i Parë in Mitrovicë.
According to "Koha Ditore" sources in the village
of Vërboc (Gllogoc municipality), precisely in the valley called Lugu
i Mollave and forests nearby, between 4.000 and 5.000 people have settled,
and there the situation is very bad. They are in bad need for medicines,
sanitary materials and food.
Yesterday evening, at 2030CET, an ICRC truck
transported 55 persons to Mitrovicë. They had been stuck in the village
of Tushilë. One of the persons transported, declared that there are
still around 4.000 people remaining in the village of Tushilë, in
a very serious conditions, and they also need medicines and food.
KOSOVA (serious humanitarian situation – Suharekë)
Grave humanitarian state of the displaced
Suharekë, 8 August (ARTA) 1730CET--
The overall situation in Suharekë municipality
is very bad. Local "Koha Ditore" sources reported a catastrophic humanitarian
state prevailing in the area. Thousands of people have been dislocated
from their homes into the areas that are considered as "safer" and in the
forests. For these past days they are facing horrible difficulties. Even
the most basic things for life are missing, while the activity of the international
humanitarian organizations is rather symbolic.
A specific problem is the lacking of health care
and medicines. The citizens of Suharekë have distributed yesterday
a considerable quantity of assistance around the villages Kravasari, Goriq
and Marali (municipality of Malishevë). Chairmen of these sub-branches
Malush Berisha and Halit Elshani say that a considerable assistance loaded
in two lorries will be distributed through the course the next day.
A difficult situation is persisting in the Suharekë
municipal villages Bllacë and Duhël, where the Serb police and
military forces continue to torch and plunder the Albanian houses.
A better situation compared to previous days
seems to prevail in the town of Suharekë proper.
KOSOVA (dramatic situation – Malishevë)
The situation in Malishevë is still bad
Malishevë, 8 August (ARTA) 1700CET--
The situation in Malishevë municipality,
continues to be dramatic as a result of the offensive undertaken by the
Serb police and military and their presence in the region.
The witnesses from Malishevë have informed
the local LDK branch that two days ago a group of doctors escorted by Serb
policemen have done the exhumation of four corpses of soldiers killed in
the clashes in Rahovec. The corpses have been reburied in Malishevë
cemetery, most probably, wanting to "prove" that some Serb civilians were
also killed in Malishevë, stated the LDK branch in Malishevë.
Apart from the assistance provided by "Mother
Teresa", UNICEF, and municipal emergency council, it is stated that several
farmers from Tërrnje have sent humanitarian assistance to the endangered
population, settled in the Malishevë woods since ten days ago.
Serb military planes and helicopters flew over
many villages of Malishevë during the day yesterday. _______________________________________________________________________

Here is the original text published by KOHA DITORE about Devic Monastery:
"KOSOVA (possible executions – Drenica)
The locals from Llaushë
are taken to Deviç Monastery for execution
Skënderaj, 8 August (ARTA) 2000CET--
.........There is still no information about
what happened with a large number of Llaushë residents, who couldn't
escape before the Serb police entered the village. According to local sources,
the Serb police are sending local people to Deviç Monastery for
execution...."
It is absolutely outdrageous to bring the Serbian Orthodox Church in connection with such news. First of all, in this as in all similar insinuations the name of the source is never mentioned. It is always a certain unnamed "local source". This highly provocative information is published although no one from 900 foreign journalists in Kosovo has anywhere confirmed or even mentioned something like that.
The nuns of Devic were accused even earlier as having made a paramilitary base in their monastery and we asked the American diplomats to visit the place and to give their testimony. Of course there was no one there except 8 elederly nuns scared to death. These nuns lived under constant siege by the KLA for months. The visitors to the monastery and pilgrims were threatened and harassed, the monastery ecconomy building in the field was looted and everything from it was taken away. At the end the nuns had to brick up their windows in fear of the attack. And now after all these sufferings and fears they are accused as executors of the innocent civilians. This is such a great injustice indeed.
Publishing or such false information in a major Albanian newspaper is openly provoking hatred against the Orthodox Christians and our Church. It is also a shame for the Albanian Arta News Agency which is by some people in the West even considered to be a "reliable source of information". With great regret we can see that there are constant attempts to accuse our Church as a supporter of violence, no matter that we have so many times openly opposed to violence on both sides and are not supporting any kind of extremism. As a rule, the recent attacks on Zociste and Devic monastery were never mentioned in the Albanian press. We have deep respect and sympathy for the suffering Albanian people but we must not forget many Serbs who had to leave their homes, who are kidnapped or killed by the extremists. It will be a great injustice to see only Albanian victims and call all Serbs criminals. There are victims on both sides as well as there are criminals and evil people on both sides. Therefore we always speak on behalf of the suffering people of Kosovo and not about suffering Serbs and Albanians. In such misfortunes and tragedies all innocent and ordinary people are loosers and victims.
I certainly do believe that KOHA will publish our denial. But still when the damage is made it is very difficult to improve the things completely.
Our consolation are the words of our Lord Jesus Christ:
"Blessed are they which
are persecuted for righteousness' sake:
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are ye,
when men shall revile you, and persecute you,
and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Rejoice, and be
exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven:
for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you."
(Mt 5,10-12)
Please keep praying for us

Decani Monastery
Dear Chief Editor,
On occasion of the article which appeared in
Koha Ditore on August 8th 1998, under the title: "The locals from Llaushë
are taken to Deviç Monastery for execution", the Orthodox Diocese
of Raska and Prizren kindly asks you to publish the following
PUBLIC DENIAL
The Orthodox Diocese of Raska and Prizren would like to file its most urgent protest against the false information about the alleged execution of Albanian civilians from Lausa village in Devic Monastery. This incorrect and provocative information, which was published in Koha Ditore Daily on August 8th 1989, is an open insult for the Serbian Orthodox Church and especially Devic Monastery in which both Serbs and Albanians have always found help and consolation.
Every honest Serb and Albanian knows well that the murder, especially the crimes against the innocent civillian population are considred to be the gravest sin and it is absolutely inacceptable even to think that such a crime could be done in a Christian shrine. We are taking this opportunity to mention that this monastery itself suffered damage in the recent fights and that several grenades fell on the monastery and damaged the church. Therefore such an accusation is a great injustice to the suffering nuns who passed through severest temptations in the last few months.
Therefore we ask Koha Ditore not to publish such unconfirmed and false information in which the Orthodox Church is abused and insulted. We are so much surprised that this campaign continues despite the fact that many times we have openly protested against the violence in Kosovo, especially against the violence against the innocent population.
And now while the most intensive armed conflicts are still raging all over Kosovo we feel our deep sympathy for suffering women, children, elderly people, numerous refugees and abductees and openly condemn any attack against civil objects and protest against the destroying of the personal and public property, religious monuments and field crops.
Once again we reiterate the firm position of the Serbian Orthodox Church that the problem of Kosovo and Metohia cannot be resolved by force and violence and we call all citizens of the province to give their unanimous support to the dialogue and the peaceful solution of the Kosovo issue.
We request most urgently that armed conflicts should stop immediately and that displaced persons are granted free return to their homes and a chance to repair their damaged or destroyed homes and property. We call all responsible authorities to grant a free access of the humanitarian aid to the people in need and we express our sincere and deep regret for all lost lives and destroyed property.
