TDA-SPONSORED TOUR TO HIGHLIGHT FINANCING FOR BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES TO REDEVELOP SOUTHERN EUROPE

World Bank and the EBRD Staff to Present Their Latest Initiatives in the Region

Washington, DC (1 September 1999) -- The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) today announced that it will host a three-city tour to highlight available multilateral funding for U.S. businesses eager to work on projects associated with redeveloping Southern Europe. The tour, which will take place October 1-5 in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Ill., and San Francisco, Calif., will feature medical, energy, water, transportation and telecommunications projects in the region.

"Billions [thousands of millions] of dollars in export opportunities exist in Southern Europe. The key for most U.S. companies is finding adequate grant assistance to mitigate the cost of entering the market, and more importantly, finding untied financing for the business opportunities that they uncover," said TDA Director J. Joseph Grandmaison.

Many of the details for project finance are still in the early development stages. This tour will provide American businesses with a status report on the latest plans of the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank, and the European Union to assist with redevelopment in Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia and Romania. The sessions will give attendees access to the senior U.S. government officials at these international entities who are fighting to ensure that where projects are being constructed with multilateral lending, American businesses are competing on a level playing field. Key sector program staff from the banks will also be on hand to present specific projects in the pipeline, as well as provide a forecast for upcoming initiatives.

Speakers will include Michael Marek, U.S. Alternate Director of the World Bank; Roy Knighton, EBRD Transportation Team Leader, and Kenneth Moorefield, Minister Counselor of the U.S. Mission to the European Union. TDA's Director Grandmaison will be joined by colleagues at the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Export-Import Bank, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, and the Agency for International Development to discuss the government's various grant assistance programs for U.S. companies working in Southern Europe.

American manufacturers, U.S. businesses with European subsidiaries or joint venture partners, small companies with technical expertise, and companies fighting to gain a foothold in this competitive market should plan to attend one of the stops along the tour. For more information, or to register, American firms should call Sarah Melendez, the event coordinator, at 301-770-3153, or visit the event Website.

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency is an independent federal agency that assists in the creation of jobs for Americans by helping U.S. companies pursue overseas business opportunities. TDA provides American firms with market entry, exposure and information through the funding of feasibility studies, technical assistance, reverse trade missions, and conferences. These efforts help American businesses establish a position in newly emerging economies.
