REPORT NO. 395
ON THE WIDESPREAD REPRESSION
AND HARASSMENT PERPETRATED
BY THE SERBIAN POLICE AND OTHER AUTHORITIES IN
KOSOVA
AS OF MARCH 1 UNTIL MARCH 6, 1998
According to our latest
available information provided in the last report (no.394), we
informed that the Ahmeti family from village
of Likoshan and their guest Behram Fazliu
from village of Gradica, were detained by the
Serbian police while they were drawing back
from Likoshan village. Meanwhile, on 2 March,
we were informed that all of them were
massacred by the Serbian special police units
and premilitary at the home-yard of the
Ahmeti family.
The police entered in the house of the Ahmeti
family of 36 members and ordered men,
women and children to lay down and started to
beat them up. All of them were subject of
the cruelest torture. Shortly after, men were
separated, taken out and massacred in the
most barbaric way. Their corpses could hardly
been identified.
Meanwhile, we had other
information from our field associates on other killing atrocities.
According to our available data, on 28 February
and 1 March, 1998, in the district of
Skënderaj the following persons were shot
dead and massacred: Ahmet (1948), Gani
(1952), Elmi (1954), Hamëz (1954), Driton
(1975), Naim (1976), Lumni (1978), Shemsi
(1979), Basri (1979) and Elhami Ahmeti (1982);
Muhamet (70) and Naser Gjeli (37) all of
them from Likoshan village; Rexhep (60) and Beqir
Brahim Rexhepi; brothers Nazmi,
Bekim, Beqir and Bedri Sejdiu; Xhemshit Nebiu
and his pregnant wife Rukije Nebiu; Ibish
Rama and Ilir Nebiu, all of them from the village
of Qirez; Behram Fazliu (50) from Gradica
village, Ismail Behrami from Baksi village and
Bekim Beqir Deliu (16) from Abria e Epërme
village, resident of the district of Skënderaj.
According to the communique
released by the Serbia Ministry of Interior, transmitted
through the Serbian media, in the evening of
5 March, from the attack of the Serbian
police forces in the village of Prekaz i Poshtëm
next to Skënderaj, 20 Albanians and two
Serbian policemen were reported killed, while
4 other policemen were wounded, whose
names were not published.
However, according to
our field associates, since the early hours in the morning of 5
March began the attack of the combined Serbian
large police, military and premilitary
forces against the villages of Skënderaj.
70 military terrain vehicles were noticed from
Komoran to Skënderaj, a long caravan of
military vehicles from Mitrovica to the direction of
Skënderaj, and a bus of policemen from Gllogoc.
From Klina, reinforcement came by 5
armoured cars, 12 lorries, 6 buses with plates
of Nish and 9 APCs. Large police and
military forces were coming from Peja, too. All
roads towards Skënderaj and the villages
nearby are blocked. Skënderaj has been blocked
by the police and military forces. Serb
snipers demonstrated aggressively their presence
on the roofs and balconies. In Gllogoc,
huge Serbian armoured forces are concentrated.
The police have built barricades by
sacks of sand.
During the brutal attack
in the villages of Prekaz, Llausha, Polac, Marina up to
Mikushnica, infantry units were seen using heavy
artillery, including grenades, cannons
and missiles. Many houses in that region were
in flames. Quarters of Jasharaj and Lushtaj
family of Prekaz village were subject of brutal
attacks by the police and army. Houses of
Shaban and Hajdar Jasharaj have been torched
to the ground. The house of Beqir
Lushtaku was in flame. Shots were heard also
in the villages of Llausha, Vojnik, Turiçec,
Çikatova, Polac, Marina and Rakinica.
Shooting from cannons were heard also in
Mitrovica, Vushtrri, Komoran and Istog. It is
supposed that there are many victims either
shot-dead or wounded.
All villages of Drenica
were abandoned. Elderly people, women and children have
abandoned their homes either by tractors, lorries
or on foot toward Mitrovica, Gllogoc,
Klina, Vushtrri, Obiliq and Prishtina. There
are not available information on their destiny,
although many Albanian families have shown readiness
for sheltering the escapees. In
"Tavnik" quarter in Mitrovica were sheltered
37- member family Halilaj from Galica village
of Drenica region, lead by Naim (18); Hasani
family from Prekaz village, and Uka family
from Balinca village. There were noted movement
in the villages around Mitrovica:
Broboniq, Lushta, Vaganica, Shipol and the quarters
of "Ura e Gjakut" and "Tavnik". One
helicopter flew flat on the villages of Koshtova,
Zhabar, Vinarc and Vidimriq. Escapees
from Drenica arrived in the districts of Lipjan
and Fushë-Kosova.
Movement of the Serbian
police forces were seen also in the direction of Junik in the
district of Deçan, and in Gjocaj village
bordered with Albania. According to unconfirmed
information, one person was killed there. Albanian
inhabitants moved also from the
villages of Ujmir, Shtarica and Siçeva.
On 2 March, at 10.00
a.m., in Prishtina started the peaceful massive protest of citizens
against the atrocities perpetrated by the Serbian
police and premilitary forces in Drenica.
Over 300.000 citizens protested. Around 10.10
a.m., every road leading to the centre of
Prishtina was blocked by the huge armoured police
forces. Around 10.35 a.m., several
hundreds of Serbian uniformed policemen and plainclothed
built barricades in the exit of
side-roads toward the centre. They attacked the
peaceful protesters by water cannons,
truncheons and tear-gas and dispersed them. Many
were beaten up and ill-treated, both
elderly, women and children. Most of the protesters
suffered heavy injuries, such as
broken limbs, jaws, teeth etc. Opposite to the
Faculty of Philosophy, a police car run over
20 peaceful protesters. Against them rushed another
car driven by a Serb civilian.
Random shooting were also heard. Dispersing the
protesters, hundreds of policemen
entered also to private homes and public premises
ill-treating the protesters. Several
Serbian students and other citizens also dispersed
the Albanian protesters by throwing
stones.
Around 11.30 a.m., through
the centre of the town, Arkan's forces singing war songs
paraded through the town. Meanwhile, around 12
p.m., the police surrounded the city of
Prishtina and the Humanitarian and Charitable
Association "Mother Theresa" in "Kodra e
Trimave" quarter in order to prevent the injured
protesters to be given the first aid.
