THE SERBIAN POLICE AND OTHER AUTHORITIES IN KOSOVA
FROM AUGUST 6, UNTIL AUGUST 9, 1998
The attacks of Serbian police and military forces
continue. Serb paramilitaries continue to plunder, burn and destroy the
Albanian houses which were preserved up to now. Many were killed or died
due to wounds or torture. Many were arrested and ill-treated. Yet, what
threatens most, are the 270.000 displaced persons, mainly women, children
and elderly. Those who did not manage to flee to Albania, Montenegro or
to other regions which were not affected by war, had to seek safety in
the open, with no food and water, clothing, medicine or medical assistance.
They are threatened by epidemics and a true humanitarian catastrophe. We
continue to list the names of those killed and massacred or those who died
due to torture during the last few days.
On July 29, Serb paramilitaries killed Ramë
S. Gashi (78), a shepherd from Lutogllava near Peja.
On August 2, Nekë Halit Pajaziti (53) from
Dobrosh near Gjakova was killed between the villages of Meja and Madanaj.
On August 4, Teki Ramshaj (26) from Rahovec died
due to being tortured at the police station in Prizren.
On August 5, Agim Brahim Zekaj (27) from Raushiq
was found killed in the vicinity of the police check-point in the outskirts
of Peja. Brahim Krasniqi from the village of Maxhunaj near Vushtrria
died in the Tirana hospital. He died due to wounds inflicted by shelling.
On August 6, Idriz Ramadan Krasniqi (1985) was
killed by the Serbian police in Billusha near Prizren. Jeton Tërstena
(24) was killed in Pantina near Vushtrria.
On August 7, Serbian forces killed Elmi Veli
Kadriu (51), from Likoc, mentally ill, Sokol Aruçi (60) and Hana
Zabeli (85) from Rezalla, paralysed. In Abria e Epërme, two youngsters
were killed due to shelling. Two corpses were brought to the morgue of
the Gjakova hospital. It is supposed that the killed are Prekë Shaban
Krasniqi and Prelë Sadri Krasniqi from the village of Meqa near Gjakova.
Mark Tunë Lleshaj (73) and Kolë Gjon Lleshaj (30) were killed
while defending their houses in the village of Vraniq near Gjakova.
On August 8, Serbian forces killed Shaban Osaj,
Ajne Zymer Zymeraj, Çaush Arif Bajraktari and his 70-year-old wife.
All were killed in their flats in Deçan. Miftar Zekaj (70) from
Rracaj near Reka e Keqe was buried in Shaptej near Deçan. He was
killed while fleeing from the Serbian aggression. Fetah Bali Gashi (90)
was buried in the village of Bubavec near Malisheva. The corpses of Murat
Kryeziu (50) and Hazir Kryeziu (50) could not be buried. All three were
killed due to shelling.
THE COURSE OF EVENTS:
AUGUST 6:
GLLOGOC AND SKëNDERAJ: Serbian police and
military forces shelled Rezalla, Likoc, Makërmal and Shtutica. Many
houses in the Potërka quarter in Llapushnik were burned. The situation
of the displaced people is very grave. There is a lack of potable water,
food and medicine. After fierce clashes, Serbian police and military forces
overran the village of Likoc. During the night, they burned all the houses
in the village.
There are no information on the whereabouts of
Ruzhdi Ahmet Gashi, his wife Shukrije and their children Besarta and Besart
from Çikatova e Re as well as Zymer Osman Mulaj (25) from Tërstenik.
KLINA: The situation of the 20.000-30.000 displaced
people, along the railroad tracks in Drenica, is alarming. They were left
with no shelter and have to deal with a lack of food, potable water and
hygienic means. There is a permanent threat of epidemics.
GJAKOVA: During the last 2 days, fighting continued
in the district of Gjakova. Military forces opened a new front towards
Has. 2 corpses were brought to the morgue of the Gjakova hospital. They
were killed during the attack of the Serbian forces on the village of Meqa.
On August 2, Nekë Halit Pajaziti (53) from Dobrosh was killed between
the villages of Meqa and Madanaj. Don Kolë Thaçi, parson in
Bec, was stopped in the outskirts of Gjakova and severely ill-treated by
the police.
DEÇAN: Last night, Serbian police and
military forces shelled Shaptej, Prejlep and Carrabreg i Poshtëm.
There were clashes in Rastavica. The village was shelled by tanks and armored
cars stationed on a hill near Prejlep and along the road from Deçan
to Gjakova. Serbian forces stationed in the military bases in Hulaj and
Podi i Gështenjave shelled the villages of Junik, Gjocaj and Jasiq.
There was shelling towards the Deçani Gorge, Dubrava and the border
with Albania.
The houses which were not damaged, are being
burned by the Serbian forces. The houses of Sylë Kuçi, Smajl
Ibërhysaj, Ukë Ibërhysaj, Ramë A. Cacaj and Nezir Gramocaj
were burned. 12 villages were left vacant. 4 villages were partially abandoned.
VUSHTRRI: Jeton Tërstena (24) was killed
during the Serbian attack on Pantina. 2 Albanians were wounded, their lives
are in danger. The house of Ramadan Mehmeti was damaged due to shelling.
Yesterday, Brahim Krasniqi from Maxhunaj died in the Tirana hospital. He
died due to wounds inflicted by shelling on the border between Kosova and
Albania.
PRIZREN: Idriz Ramadan Krasniqi (1985) was killed
by the police at the place called "Laku i Billushës" in Billusha.
Veli Latif Gashi (55) was wounded.
On August 4, Teki Ramshaj (26) from Rahovec died
due to being tortured at the police station in Prizren.
MALISHEVA: Serbian forces continue to burn different
buildings in Malisheva, Carralluka and other nearby villages. Some 100.000
people, who were displaced from the districts of Gjakova, Klina, Gllogoc,
Lipjan, Suhareka and Rahovec, were sheltered in three villages of the district
of Malisheva, which were not affected by the Serbian offensive. Some were
sheltered in schools, mosques and other facilities. The others are in the
open and in a very grave situation.
SUHAREKA: Serbian police and military forces
shelled Bllaca. Isuf Suka was severely wounded. 120 houses were plundered
and burned.
The displaced people were sheltered in the forests
of Kërvasaria and Pagarusha. No aid was distributed to the displaced.
Shooting can be heard in Suhareka, day and night.
OBILIQ: During the last 3 days, many Serb civilians
in Obiliq and the surrounding villages were mobilized. War planes flew
over Obiliq. Serbian police and military forces stationed in the "Kosova
B" Power Plant, Plemetin, "Kërshat" e Grabovcit, Janovoda and Hade
are targeting the villages of Grabovc i Poshtëm, Grabovc i Epërm,
Shipitulla, Sibovc, Lajthishta and Hamidi. During the last 2 days, there
were large displacements from Hamidia, Sibovc and Lajthishta.
MITROVICA: Serb soldiers travelling in a military
convoy opened fire towards 12 tractors carrying displaced people from Drenica,
who were heading for Kçiq. Some 20 policemen raided the house of
Shaban Dervish Kopriva in the "Tavnik" quarter. They searched for his son
Shpend (29) and nephew Rexha (33). In "Tavnik", police raided the houses
of Avdullah (55), Isuf (47) and Idriz Daut Hoti (45), Tahir Zukë Neziri
(40) and Bajram (63) and Sinan Jahir Sumiqi (50). The latter was arrested
and beaten. In Broboniq, police broke into the houses of Ahmet Nezir Doroci
(54), Skënder (44) and Ragip Adem Behrami (47). These houses were
plundered. Machine gun fire was opened in the "Bair" quarter. In Hani i
Elezit, Milazim Dulah Fejzullahu (56), a bus driver, was taken out of the
"Kosovatransi" bus and physically ill-treated. Due to injuries suffered
Milazim had to seek for medical help.
ISTOG: Policeman Salem Gjogoviq opened fire towards
Zymber Ademaj, member of the board of the LDK branch in Istog. Rexhep Maksuti
and Ramadan Selmanaj were taken to the police station and physically ill-treated.
GJILAN: In Labjan, police stopped Ramadan Mustafa
(1946), a former miner from Vërbica near Zhegoc. DM 10 were plundered
from him. His son Avni (12) suffered trauma.
FERIZAJ: In Tankosiq, police threatened Rasim
Azem Mehmeti.
PRISHTINA: The Military Court in Nish sentenced
Fadil Bicaj (1959), Bedri Kukalaj (1978) and Hysen Mazrekaj (1964) - farmers,
to 13 years of imprisonment. Armend Mazrekaj (1980) was sentenced to 8
years. The above mentioned are from Prejlep near Deçan and were
indicted for "terrorist activity".
AUGUST 7:
SKëNDERAJ: According to Mercy Corps International
since August 4, there is no information on the following villagers of Llausha:
Shaban Hasan Geci and (6 members of his family), Sheremet H. Geci (6),
Hamzë H. Geci (2), Fadil H. Geci (2), Musa Nezir Geci (1), Limon Keqë
Geci (1), Murat Geci (1), Mentor Hajzer Geci (1), Fejzë Ramadan Geci
(1), Shaban Feriz Geci (2), Faza Halil Geci (1), Avdyl Jusuf Geci (1),
Rrahman Geci (1), Veli S. Geci (1), Sadri Tafë Geci (1), Musli Sadri
Geci (3), Haxhi Hajdin Geci (1), Bajram Sylë Geci (2), Rrahim Milazim
Geci (1), Safet Geci (2), Sami Rrahim Geci (1), Muharrem Tahir Geci (1),

same happened to the families of Jakup Hamzë Geci (supposed to be
massacred by Serbian forces), Bajram Galan Geci, Ramadan Smajl Geci, Halim
Rexhep Geci, Hajrullah Idriz Geci, Bajram Galan Geci, Ramadan Smajl Geci,
Halim Rexhep Geci, Hajrullah Idriz Geci, Bedri Hetem Bimbashi, Imer Shaqir
Bimbashi, Tahir Jashar Bimbashi, Pajazit Jashar Bimbashi, Nasuf Miftar
Bimbashi, Vehbi Shaqir Bimbashi, Zymer Bimbashi, Halim Zeqir Bimbashi,
Sefer Zeqir Bekteshi, Xhafer Bekteshi, Mehmet Bekteshi, Gani Jashar Bekteshi,
Zenel Zymer Bekteshi, Xheladin Halim Bekteshi, Smajl Rexhep Shatri and
Sabit Rexhep Shatri.
After the fierce clashes in Drenica, Serbian
police, military and paramilitary forces managed to enter the village of
Likoc. A few hours later, these forces had to withdraw towards Marina.
While withdrawing, they killed Elmi Veli Kadriu (51), a mentally ill person
from Likoc, Sokol Aruçi (60) from Rezalla and Hana Zabeli (85),
paralysed. In Abria e Epërme, two youngsters were killed due to shelling.
As the corpses were carbonized they could not be identified. During the
attack, the Serbian forces burned the villages of Polac, Marina, Kryshec,
Rezalla, Açareva and Likoc. In Likoc, the building of the oldest
primary school in Drenica was burned. The school was built in 1923. The
very same happened to the policlinic of the "Mother Theresa" Humanitarian
and Charitable Association, to the Kadriaj, Zymberaj and Veselaj quarters.
The inhabitants of the above mentioned villages sought shelter in the forests
of Qyqavica. No humanitarian aid was given to them.
GLLOGOC: Serbian police and military forces stationed
in Polac shelled the villages of Shtutica and Vërboc. Fire was opened
from the "Ferronikli" Plant. War planes flew over Gllogoc and its surroundings.
Serbian forces stationed in the military base in Çuka e Zabelit
opened tank fire towards Nekoc. 6 grenades fell on Polluzha. The son of
Hamit Hamiti from Likoc was severely wounded. He lost his leg. For 2 weeks
now, there are no information on the whereabouts of Fazile (18) and Elbasan
Xhafer Hajdaraj (19) from Buroja.
According to our field associates, it is not
true that Albanian citizens are returning to Gllogoc as broadcasted by
Serb media. They have no place to return to as their houses were destroyed
and burned or are targeted by Serb snipers.
GJAKOVA: Fighting continues on the border zone
with Albania and in the villages of Dushkaja. All inhabitants have fled
from the villages of Koshare, Batusha, Molliq, Brovina, Smolica, Stublla,
Berjaha, Nivokaz, Dobrosh, Sheremet, Ramoc, Cërmjan, Gërgoc,
Zhabel, Bardhaniq, Jabllanica, Krelan, Rakovina, Meqe, Zylfaj, Pnish and
Goden. Two corpses were brought to the morgue of the Gjakova hospital.
It is supposed that the killed are Prekë Shaban Krasniqi and Prelë
Sadri Krasniqi from Meqe near Gjakova. There were fierce clashes in Vraniq.
Mark Tunë Lleshaj (73) and Kolë Gjon Lleshaj (30) were killed.
Their houses were burned. Serbian forces sent an ultimatum to the villagers
of Gërçina, Lipovec and Skivjan. They were ordered to surrender
otherwise they would be shelled.
DEÇAN: During the night, Serbian police
and military forces shelled the villages of Voksh, Junik and Prejlep. Many
houses were burned. Artillery fire was opened towards the border with Albania.
According to a villager from Cërmjan, since
August 2, 150-200 women, children and elderly are stuck in a mountain gorge
near Shushica e Krelanit.
Since August 2, there are no information on the
whereabouts of Zeqir Halil Qorraj, a diabetic from Carrabreg i Poshtëm.
MALISHEVA: Since July 25, there are no information
on the whereabouts of Rexhep Ujkan Gashi from Vërmica near Malisheva,
her daughter Selvije Gashi Mujaj and her 3 children.
PRIZREN: Serbian police and military forces shelled
a part of the town and several villages of Vrrin. Ruzhdi Berisha, a deputy
in the Assembly of Kosova, was arrested and physically ill-treated.
Qelebije Aliarifi (1944) and Luan Hidajet Vuçitërna
(1973) were taken to the hospital in Prizren. Both were wounded 20 days
ago, during the Serb offensive on Rahovec. Since July 19, there are no
information on the whereabouts of Samir Shehu (1978), Sylejman S. Sharku
and Murat Deliu. All three were reported missing after the attack on Rahovec.
Abaz Demir Ndrecaj (1938) from Maqiteva was reported missing since July
26.
OBILIQ: War planes flew Obiliq and its surrounding
villages. Fire was opened from the Serb positions in Hade, Janovoda and
the "Kosova B" Power Plant.
MITROVICA: Activists of the ICRC, brought 55
displaced persons, mainly women and children from the villages Drenica
to Mitrovica. All had spent the last few days in the open near Tushilla.
In "Tavnik", police raided the house of Mulla Bajram Adem Avdiu (72). Many
religious books were seized. In the vicinity of the bus station, police
stopped and physically ill-treated Nazmi Hasan Beka (36) from Çabra
and Avni Ali Sahiti (24) from Vaganica. Police stopped a group of foreign
journalists. They were taken to the police station and interrogated. Xhevat
Bejtullah Beshiri (54), who was accompanying the group, was beaten, insulted
on a national basis and threatened. In the center of Mitrovica, police
stopped Isuf Xhevat Hasani (22) and Qazim Xhafer Hasani (36) from Vinarc.
150 kg of flour were seized from them.
SHTIME: Serbian police and military forces shelled
the villages of the Carraleva Gorge.
PRISHTINA: On August 1, Skënder Ademi (1977),
living in "Matia Gubec" st. 25, was arrested in Lipjan. He was sent to
30 days of pre-trial detention.
SUHAREKA: In the early hours of the morning,
war planes flew over the town. 3 police check-points were set-up in the
town. The identities of passers-by are checked. Many are ill-treated.
GJILAN: Since early in the morning, a "Niva"
car of the Serb army is patrolling through Zhegra. Cars and passers-by
are checked. The road from Zhegra to Gjilan is blocked by the Serbian police.
FERIZAJ: In the center of the town, police seized
tobacco from Albanian vendors. Serb vendors were not disturbed.
AUGUST 8:
DEÇAN: Serbian forces killed Shaban Osaj,
Ajne Zymer Zymeraj, Çaush Arif Bajraktari and his 70 year-old wife.
All were killed in their flats in Deçan. Serbian police and military
forces opened fire towards Shaptej, Gramaçel and the villages of
Dushkaja. During the night, Serb paramilitaries carried plundered goods
from the villages in the district of Deçan: tractors, cars, house
commodities as well as cattle, sheep and other animals. Many women, children
and elderly, who had fled from the Serbian aggression, are wandering in
the open. While fleeing, Miftar Zekaj (70) from Rracaj i Rekës së
Keqe died. He was buried in Shaptej near Deçan.
GLLOGOC: Regardless of the fact that the Serbian
regime is inviting Albanians to return to their homes, many are summoned
for informative talks and ill-treated. Ismet Elezi and Islam Demaku from
Gllogoc as well as Besim Demaku from Çikatova e Re were taken to
the police station and ordered to report again on Monday.
Activists of the "Mother Theresa" Humanitarian
and Charitable Association were stopped and ill-treated.
SKëNDERAJ: Serbian forces overran the village
of Polac and started burning the houses. Snipers are shooting at everything
that moves.
SHTIME: Serbian forces shelled Godanc i Epërm.
The house of Asllan Hasani was destroyed. That of Avdi Veseli was damaged.
OBILIQ: Serb civilians are drafted in Obiliq
and the surrounding villages. Trenches are opened in the vicinity of the
"Kosova B" Power Plant. Paramilitaries and armed Serb civilians are patrolling
along the banks of the Sitnica river.
MITROVICA: Ismet Muharrem Krasniqi (32), living
in the "Bair" quarter, was stopped and beat by the police only because
he is Albanian. In the "Bair" quarter police raided the house of Nexhmedin
Hetem Llausha (45). Hetem had been arrested 3 days earlier. In downtown
Prishtina, police arrested Adem Muharrem Smakiqi (33) from the "Qendra"
quarter in Mitrovica. He was beaten and DM 600 were looted from him. Later
on, Adem was released.
SHTëRPCë: The policemen who were escorting
a military convoy brutally beat Ilir Islami (19) from Firaja, a shepherd,
who was grazing his cattle.
MALISHEVA: Fetah Bali Gashi (90) was buried in
the village of Bubavec near Malisheva. The corpses of Murat Kryeziu (50)
and Hazir Kryeziu (75) could not be buried. All three were killed due to
shelling. There is still no information on the whereabouts of Bajram Ali
Kryeziu (75) and Hajdin Demush Kryeziu from Bubavec.
PRIZREN: The Serbian forces which were stationed
in the military barracks in Prizren opened fire in different directions.
KLINA: 15 local Serbs and policemen were settled
in Albanian flats.
AUGUST 9:
DEÇAN: Since early in the morning, Serbian
police and military forces launched an attack with missiles and heavy artillery
on the villages of Junik, Voksh, Carrabreg i Poshtëm, Loxha, Lluka
e Epërme, Prejlep, Beleg and Rastavica.
SKëNDERAJ: During the Serb attack on Likoc
46 houses were burned. In Llausha, all the houses in the Gecaj and Vojvoda
quarters were destroyed. There are no information on the fate of 500-600
Albanian villagers who were stuck in Llausha.
OBILIQ: The Serbian forces which were stationed
in Grabovc, Bardh i Madh and Plemetin opened fire towards Grabovc i Epërm
and Grabovc i Poshtëm, Shipitulla, Lajthishta, Hamidia and Sibovc.
At the place called "Fusha e Mollës", between Obiliq and Vërboc,
3500-4000 people, mainly women, children and elderly are in the open.
LIPJAN: During the last 2 days, Serbian forces
shelled the villages of Shala, Krojmir and Pjetërshtica. The villagers
have fled this region.
MITROVICA: Police raided the house of Shaban
Dervish Kopriva (67). His son Shpend (29) was arrested. Police raided the
houses of Ismet Kabashi (50), a lawyer living in the "Bair" quarter and
that of Sezai Ali Misini (38), living in the "Qendra" quarter. The latter
was arrested.
DELAYED INFORMATION:
GJAKOVA: From July 5 until July 7, Gëzim
Rexha (1969) from Dobrosh, a blind-man, an English language teacher, was
kept in detention at the police station in Gjakova. He was provoked, threatened
and forced to sign a statement, the content of which he did not know.
PRIZREN: After the Serb attack on Xërxa,
on July 18, 3 houses and a shop were burned. The house of Nexhibe Gashi
was plundered and burned. In Bellacërka, the houses of Sinan and Isa
Berisha were burned.
PEJA: On July 26, at the police check-point in
Savinavoda, Mustafë Morina (33) from Dollova was taken out of the
bus. He and his 11 member family were travelling to Rozhaja. Eversince,
there are no information on him.
On July 29, during the attack of the Serbian
police and military forces on the village of Drenoc, the following were
arrested and sent to the Security Center in Peja: Osman Fejzë Krasniqi
(70), Xhezide Krasniqi (62), Vezire Krasniqi (25), Shaip Krasniqi (16),
Qerim Zymer Krasniqi (52), Shaqir Krasniqi (53) and Nazif Krasniqi (57).
On being brutally beaten they were released. Shaqir and Nazif Krasniqi
were kept in detention. Their families and lawyers are not allowed to contact
with them. Those released are being hospitalized due to the injuries suffered
in the police station. The very same day, police searched for weapons in
the house of Binak Kadriu (40), living in "2 Korriku" quarter. As they
failed to find any, they beat him until he fainted. 3 armed Serb civilians
went into the house of Bajram Morina in the "Karagaçi" quarter.
He was tied and beaten. His wife was threatened to hand in all the money
they had. Not being satisfied with the "prey", DM 300, they demolished
the house.
On August 4, Serbian police arrested Muhamet
Haxhë Kelmendi (23) from Peja. Due to being severely beaten he suffered
body injuries. Later on, he was released.
PRISHTINA: On July 28, in the vicinity of the
"Xhevdet Doda" Gymnasium two policemen physically ill-treated Besnik Kajtazi
(1979), a student, associate of the "Pax Christi" organization. DM 1900
and Dinars 300 were looted from him.
On August 5, an armed Serb civilian stopped Besim
Hasani (1957), an economist, chairman of Kosova's Olympic Committee. He
was threatened to be killed and hit with the barrel of the gun.
DEÇAN: On August 2, after the attack of
the Serbian police and military forces on Lugu i Baranit, in Nepole the
houses of the following were plundered and burned: Hil Demushi, Lekë
Demushi, Kristë Ndou, Nikë Krasniqi, Kolë Krasniqi, Mikel
Krasniqi, Zef Uka, Pashk Zefi, Kristë Zefi, Mark Zefi, Tom Deda, Ndue
Deda, Gjokë Palushi, Pjetër Nika, Zef Preni, Pal Avdyli, Nikollë
Sokoli, Pjetër Azemi, Bardhec Halili, Musa Lezi, Lush Kola, Tanush
Kadria, Mark Kadria, Gjon Kadria, Qazim Kadria, Ramadan Osmani, Pal Marashi,
Lan Marjani and Gjergj Dushi. The village is full of killed cattle, burned
buses, trucks and cars as well as burned haystacks. In Gllogjan, the house
of Rrok Cenë Berisha was burned. The houses of Kolë Zenel Thaçi,
Dodë Zenel Thaçi, Ndue Zenel Thaçi, Leonard Kristë
Thaçi and Mark Sokol Thaçi were damaged in fire. The Catholic
Church in Gllogjan was plundered and damaged. 300 Albanians, mainly women,
children and elderly had sought shelter in it. Drugs and equipment estimated
to DM 6000 were looted from the church's policlinic.
KAMENICA: On August 4, Serbian civilians from
Çarakoc opened fire towards the Albanian villages of Dajkoc, Muçivërc
and Kopërnica.
GLLOGOC and SKëNDERAJ: On August 5, an armored
car entered the Janova quarter in Korretica e Poshtme. Fire was opened
towards the houses of Hashim and Nebih Janova. Large areas of land were
burned. In Skënderaj, police plundered the house of Hamit Pajazit
Xhemajli (67).
VUSHTRRI: On August 5, a police patrol severely
ill-treated Ali Xhibexhiu, owner of the "Evropa" private enterprise. He
was ill- treated as he was preparing 300 kg of bread for the displaced
villagers from Drenica. Serbian police intervened in several cafes, ill-treating
many Albanian citizens. Among the ill-treated was Semir Imeri, a pensioner.
MITROVICA: On August 5, Serbian police raided
the house of Nexhmedin H. Llausha (45) in the "Bair" quarter.
FERIZAJ: On August 5, there was shooting in the
villages of Nerodima e Poshtme, Nerodima e Epërme and Manastirc. The
houses of Rrustem H. Rexhepi, Gani H. Rekaj and Hamdi A. Aliu were plundered.
