Serb forces have been trying to overrun positions held by local Albanian resistance forces, and the UÇK. There have been no immediate reports on casualties, but the material damage is presumed to be immense.
Motorized Serb army units which moved last night towards the villages of Deçan - also the scene of continued fighting between local Albanian forces and Serb military and police units - blocked today routes towards the villages of Trakaniq, Novoselllë, Dobrigjë, etc., and are being positioned near the villages of Gramaçel, Gllogjan, and Shaptej.

Serbian Military and Police Mount Large-scale Offensive in Drenica Today
PRISHTINA, Aug 2 (KIC) - At five o'clock in the
morning today (Sunday), Serbian military and police forces launched a large-scale
offensive against many villages in the municipality of Skenderaj ('Srbica'),
in the region of Drenica, LDK sources said.
A local source from the village of Llaushë
said Serb forces were pounding the village with heavy artillery guns. Reports
said Serb forces used ground-to-ground rockets in their assault on Drenica
villages, too.
LDK sources said an extremely grave situation
prevails today in the villages of Çubrel, Vitak, Klinë, Padalishtë,
Runik.
A resident from Prishtina, originating from Brojë,
said he had contacted relatives who said the villages of Brojë, Vojnikë,
Turiçevc, and Kopiliq were being shelled today.
The villages of Polluzhë and Tërstenik
have been attacked, too, local sources of the Council for the Defense of
Human Rights and Freedoms (CDHRF) said.
Thousands of inhabitants from the municipality
of Skenderaj have fled their homes and run to the mountains for days now.
Their health condition is reported to be alarming, as food and medical
supplies are lacking there.
This year's Serb offensive in Kosova started
in late February, early March when Albanian villages in the region of Drenica
were attacked by Serb paramilitary police in what amounted to a military
operation which left villages in rubble and scores of civilians killed
in their home.
'Yugoslav' President Slobodan Milosevic "assured"
senior EU diplomats on Thursday the Serb offensive was over. It was yet
another ploy, or perhaps the very words European and American diplomats
wished to hear as a face-saving way out. Milosevic assured them, so they
will have to wait for his words to bear fruit, the argument goes.

sheltered under the wide open sky.

Albanian civilians by raising three fingers and with uncontrolled shouts
and arrogant behavior, followed by automatic bursts in the direction of
the nearby civilians.
A few days ago the Serb soldiers on a military
convoy, forced all the vehicles moving in the opposite direction to park
along the main road, near the Lipjan-Janjevë axis.
KOSOVA (Central Emergency Council appeal)
Help IDPs with all we have
Prishtina, 1 August (ARTA) 1900CET--
"...In this alarming situation for the life and
security of more than 250 thousand people that fled their burned, destroyed
and looted homes, mainly women, children and elderly, not only is the Serb
regime making it impossible for the humanitarian associations to help the
needy, but also the international community has joined these obstacles
by banning the Fund of the Government of the Republic of Kosova, dedicated
for these people.
The international associations and organizations
that work in Kosova, with their negligence and their posture have not done
much in easing this catastrophe, because their assistance either doesn't
reach the needy or are insufficient.
Thus, the Emergency Council makes the following
appeal:
1. To all Albanians wherever they are, all political
subjects in Kosova to help and do all they can to help the fleeing, not
only in Kosova but also outside Kosova. Their life is in danger, not only
from the Serb aggression but also the humanitarian catastrophe they are
facing.
2. The international factor, which is a direct
participant of the tragedy of our people, because it has become a silent
observer of this humanitarian catastrophe, should open corridors so the
assistance to reach the needy and thus the lives of the endangered can
be saved.
3. The Governments of the Western countries where
the Funds of the Government have been blocked, to lift the blockade dedicated
to help the Kosova people. The blocking of these Funds is another injustice
towards the Albanian people in the most difficult moments of their existence",
it is said among others in the Central Emergency Council’s communiqué.
KOSOVA (bomb explosion - Prishtina)

Prishtina, 1 August (ARTA) 2030CET--
Last night, at around 0100CET, a strong explosion
occurred last night around the grounds of the Clinical Hospital Center
in Prishtina, inform CDHRF sources.
The same sources claim that the bomb has totally
destroyed a kiosk owned by an Albanian merchant.
Armed Serb guards are constantly watching the
hospital center, under Serb administration since 1990.
KOSOVA (detention – Ferizaj)
Agim Reçica still under arrest
Ferizaj, 1 August (ARTA) 1830CET--
Seven LDK branch activists, arrested yesterday
during the police intervention in its premises, were released the same
day, after being kept under arrest for several hours. All the arrested
were subjected to severe beating, LDK sources inform.
Agim Reçica, chairman of LDK second sub-branch,
is still being kept under arrest.
Ferizaj’s LDK leader, Adem Salihaj, tells that
after being arrested on the road, the police held him behind the police
station for one hour. After raiding his house the police then, tied him
up to an iron closet.
These arrests were condemned today by the LDK
branch Leadership in Ferizaj that considers them as "the Serb Government's
attempt to ruin the political organization of the branch and of the Albanian
people in general".
KOSOVA (KD reportage – Malishevë)
Waiting for the return...
Pagarushë, 1 August (ARTA) 2030CET--
"This is our fourth day under the wide open sky",
commented by the way an old man fixing a sack of grain which will serve
as a pillow to him for another night.
Yesterday, a group of 70 people, inhabitants
of Marali, spent the night in a field converted into a sheltering camp.
At the camp surrounded by a fence made of sticks,
the smoke was coming out from the "bakery" built in a mud pit, where bread
was being baked for the villagers, who could count only on the seasonal
vegetables as food.
Over 30 ten-year-olds were running around two
trucks filled with sponges and mattresses. Their bare feet were all muddy...
They gathered around the vehicle that just came from Prishtina, and were
looking at the visitors with wide-open eyes, without saying a word. Their
childish curiosity immediately included them in the game with the new people
in the village.
"We will return home as soon as it is safe to
go back", said the teacher from Dragobil, which according to him is still
on fire. The houses are not the only things burning; the fields are burning
as well.
"In Carralevë, they also burned the grain",
a voice was heard coming out from the crowd of people that surrounded the
journalists.
All the villages are emptied. They all had the
same fate. All of them were shelled. There are only elderly, abandoned
to live their few remaining days in their houses, defending their homes
and taking care of the cattle.
"In Astrazub, they first looted several houses,
and then they burned them... probably to hide the traces", said a man in
his thirties, sheltered since four days ago in the overloaded houses of
the villages between Rahovec and Suharekë.
A day after the clashes in Rahovec, all the inhabitants
could not run away, they were searching for ways to do that.
Today, those that ran, want to go back, but...
"I want to go back, but I can't – someone has to give us a guarantee that
they won't harm us", said an inhabitant of Rahovec, who first fled to Malishevë
and then from there to another village.
An unorganized return of Albanians would be fatal.
A boy who tried to return home, besides the injuries he received during
the fighting, he was also "rewarded" with a broken nose by the police at
the checkpoint.
On the other hand, over 80 inhabitants of Rahovec,
returned home from Prizren, on two buses. What will their life be under
the reinforced police rule, remains to be seen.
Over tens of thousands of people are still wandering
in the forests and the hospitable Albanian houses in the neighboring villages
still outside the fire of the war.
The return to their villages will not be easy
for them at all. There they will find burned, destroyed and looted houses,
while the golden grain fields, have now turned black.
