"We keep hearing about more suicide bombings going on. This in it
self is horrifying, and I keep asking myself what is the difference between
state organized terrorism and individual terrorism. The answer that keeps
coming up is what my Government keeps repeating. Israeli state organized
terrorism is defined by the US as self-defense; individuals protesting
occupation are called terrorists. I say it is all Terrorism! We have to
stop pretending that one sort of terrorism is good and the other is bad.
To
kill a civilian is to kill civilian, but there is a big difference when
the killing is supported by a state.
The truth is the Israeli State organized terrorism
and the occupation is breading the individual terrorist.

Pax Christi USA Statement
For Immediate Release
End the Occupation: End the Cycle of Destruction
The terrible situation in Israel/Palestine this week is a bitter testimony
to the utter failure of increased violence as a means to end violence.
Pax Christi USA unequivocally condemns the recent suicide bombings by Palestinians
in Israel as well as the brutal escalation of violence against civilians
in the Occupied Territories being carried out by the Israeli Defense Forces.
This cycle of violence must end. Pax Christi USA stands in solidarity
with those on both sides of the conflict who have rejected the destructive
and fruitless cycle of violence that now engulfs that land.
In particular, we support the efforts of the Latin Patriarch in Jerusalem,
Archbishop Michel Sabbah, President of Pax Christi International, and other
religious leaders in the Holy Land who have offered to mediate an end to
the standoff in Bethlehem. We call upon the Israeli Defense Forces
to allow this delegation of religious leaders access to Bethlehem in order
to facilitate the evacuation of wounded civilians and negotiate a nonviolent
resolution to the siege of the Church of the Nativity.
Our prayers go with U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell, as he travels
to the region this week. We are, however, deeply troubled by the
U.S. position over the past 17 months that a cease-fire in the current
conflict must precede efforts at a political settlement. Moreover
we are concerned over ongoing U.S. support for the Israeli occupation,
support which sustains Israel’s ability to, as Pope John Paul II pointed
out this week, impose “unjust conditions and humiliations” upon the more
than 3 million Palestinian people living under occupation. It is
clear that Israel has engaged in widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure
in the Occupied Territories, subjected civilians to round-the-clock curfews,
denied them access to food, water and medical services and engaged in summary
executions. All these are grave violations of the Fourth Geneva Convention.
U.S. financial aid and political support for Israeli activities in violation
of international law must end. The U.S. will never be an effective
force for peace while it continues to support the forces of occupation.
The occupation is itself an ongoing and pervasive violence perpetrated
against all Palestinians living in the West Bank, Gaza and Jerusalem. Secretary
Powell’s efforts must include concrete U.S. commitments to end support
for the occupation and full implementation of United Nations’ Security
Council Resolutions 242. 338 and 1402. Pax Christi USA calls upon
the Administration and Congress to immediately restrict all U.S. military
aid to Israel from being used in the Occupied Territories. The United
States cannot be a credible partner for peace while U.S. made weapons continue
to be turned upon Palestinian civilians.
Pax Christi USA affirms the call of Pope John Paul II for Sunday April
7th to be a Day of Prayer for Peace in the Middle East and urges all our
members, supporters and friends to participate in a Chain of Prayer and
Light from April 8-15 as called for by Pax Christi International.

The EU is Israel's largest trading partner. As such, the EU could
have a lot of influence over Israel if it wished to exercise it. The EU
accounts for 27% of Israeli exports and 43% of Israeli imports.

Israeli tanks enter Jenin in West Bank -witnesses
JENIN, West Bank, April 2 — Twelve Israeli tanks
pushed into the northern West Bank town of Jenin on Tuesday, Palestinian
security sources and witnesses said.
It was not immediately clear if
the thrust was the prelude to a full-scale incursion into Jenin, where
the sources said about 150 tanks and armoured vehicles had gathered on
the outskirts.
Israel has reoccupied several West
Bank towns since Friday when it sent tanks to break into Palestinian President
Yasser Arafat's headquarters in the city of Ramallah.

Dear Friends,
The situation in Palestine is deteriorating from hour to hour, and
this is only the beginning. Sharon's plan is re-occupy all the West Bank,
and apparently kill Arafat, directly or with some other trick that we shall
never know certainly what happened (the desicion was not to deport him
because he can be dangerous outside...).
Prof.Lev Grinberg
ISRAEL'S STATE TERRORISM
By Lev Grinberg *
Director of the Humphrey Institute for Social Research at Ben Gurion
University
What is the difference between State terrorism and
individual terrorist acts? If we understand this difference we?ll understand
also the evilness of the US policies in the Middle East and the forthcoming
disasters. When Yassir Arafat was put under siege in his offices and kept
hostage by the Israeli occupation forces, he was constantly pressed into
condemning terror and combatting terrorism. Israel?s Stateterrorism is
defined by US officials as "self-defense", while individual suicide bombers
are called terrorists.
The only ?small? difference is that Israeli aggression
is the direct responsibility of Ariel Sharon, Benjamin Ben Eliezer, Shimon
Peres and Shaul Mofaz, while the individual terrorist acts are done by
individuals in despair, usually against Arafat?s will. One hour after Arafat
declared his support of a cease fire and wished the Jews a Happy Passover
feast, a suicide bomber exploded himself in an hotel in Netanya, killing
22 innocent Jews celebrating Passover. Arafat was blamed as responsible
for this act, and the present IDF offensive has been justified through
this accusation.
At the same time, Sharon?s responsibility for Israeli
war crimes is being completely ignored. Who should be arrested for the
targeted killing of almost 100 Palestinians? Who will be sent to jail for
the killing of more than 120 Palestinian paramedics? Who will be sentenced
for the killing of more than 1,200 Palestinians and for the collective
punishment of more than 3,000,000 civilians during the last 18 months?
And who will face the International Tribunal for the illegal settlement
of occupied Palestinian Lands, and the disobedience of UN decisions for
more than 35 years?
Suicide bombs killing innocent citizens must be
unequivocally condemned; they are immoral acts, and their perpetrators
should be sent to jail. But they cannot be compared to State terrorism
carried out by the Israeli Government. The former are individual acts of
despair of a people that sees no future, vastly ignored by an unfair and
distorted international public opinion. The latter are cold and "rational"
decisions of a State and a military apparatus of occupation, well equipped,
financed and backed by the only superpower in the world.
Yet in the public debate, State terrorism and individual
suicide bombs are not even considered as comparable cases of terrorism.
The State terror and war crimes perpetrated by the Israeli Government are
legitimized as "self-defense", while Arafat, even under siege, is demanded
to arrest "terrorists."
I want to ask: Who will arrest Sharon, the person
directly responsible for the orders to kill Palestinians? When is he going
to be defined a terrorist too? How long will the world ignore the Palestinian
cry that all they want is freedom and independence? When will it stop neglecting
the fact that the goal of the Israeli Government is not security, but the
continued occupation and subjugation of the Palestinian people?
As Israelis in the opposition, we are fighting against
our government, but the international support that Sharon receives is constantly
jeopardizing our struggle. The whole international public opinion must
be reverted, and the UN must deploy intervention forces in order to stop
the bloodshed and the imminent deterioration. Israelis and Palestinians
desperately need the awakening of the international community's public
opinion and a reversal in the global attitude. These are needed both in
order to save our lives (literally), and preserve our hope in a better
future.

Israeli troops ransacks hospitals in Ramallah
Occupied Jerusalem: 31 March, 2002 (IAP News)
Heavily armed Israeli soldiers, equipped with hammers and mattocks,
stormed and ransacked a major hospital in Ramallah Sunday, Palestinian
sources said.
The sources said as many as a hundred crack troops
rampaged through the hospital, harassing doctors and nurses.
"They told us to huddle in two rooms and threatened
to shoot and kill anybody not heeding their orders," said A. Barghouthi,
an internist at the hospital.
"They are now in control of the hospital."
Sources at the hospital said the Israeli occupation
soldiers were interrogating terrified patients, some of whom are in serious
condition.
The hospital administration appealed to the international
community and medics around the world to exert pressure on the Israeli
government to stop "this savagery."
"They are behaving like Nazis, yes like Nazis,"
said a Dutch volunteer paramedic.
Earlier, Israeli tanks stormed the main Ramallah
hospital amid fierce non-violent resistance from medical teams and foreign
volunteers who arrived in Ramallah in an effort to deter the Israeli army
from perpetrating atrocities against the Palestinians.
The draconian measures, considered war crimes under
international law, prompted Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat
to charge that Israel was treating the Palestinian people very much like
the Nazis troops treated Jews during WWII.

Greek parliament speaker accuses Israel of 'genocide'
Sun Mar 31,11:16 AM ET
ATHENS, Greece - The speaker of Greece's parliament accused Israel Sunday
of committing genocide against the Palestinian people and called for international
intervention to protect them.
"This is a barbaric attack on a defenseless people, whose only wish
is to live on the land of their forefathers," Apostolos Kaklamanis said.
"The Greek people, the government, political parties and parliament condemn
this genocide taking place in Palestine." Greece has backed calls by the
European Union (news - web sites) for the withdrawal of Israeli troops
from the West Bank town of Ramallah and release from captivity of Palestinian
leader Yasser Arafat (news - web sites). Premier Costas Simitis, in a statement
Sunday, said Greece has "close ties with the Israeli and Palestinian people"
and offered to mediate in any peace initiative accepted by both sides.
Foreign Minister George Papandreou hopes to visit Israel and Palestinian
areas this week but may postpone the trip for security concerns, diplomatic
officials said.

The Israeli military is holding international civilians and three
Palestinian
medics on the grounds of the Presidential compound. They have been
held there for over two hours. The military has requested that the international
observers leave without the Palestinian medics. Fearing for the safety
of the medical personnel the international civilians are not leaving.

Gush Shalom
A Queue of Bombers
Uri Avnery
24/03/02
When a whole people is seething with rage, it becomes a dangerous enemy,
because the rage does not obey orders.
When this rage overflows, it creates suicide bombers - human bombs
fuelled by the power of anger, against whom there is no defence.
A person who has given up on life, is free to do whatever his disturbed
mind dictates.
The actions of General Mofaz during the last month have brought this
rage to an unprecedented pitch and instilled it into the hearts of every
Palestinian, be he a university professor or a street boy, a housewife
or a high-school girl, a leftist or a fundamentalist.
