1600ccm limit. Best practising 47 is Trevor Taylor´s in forth place, the Team Elite car with Lucas fuel injection, whereas C.Barber´s car with J.Hine driving must have had carburetors.
Number Nine lead the field of 81 starters comfortably and was extending the gap, but it did not leave the Alpine Renault Prototypes behind, as is sometimes stated, but only the last survivor of the four and final winner. The others had retired earlier in the race. Trevor Taylor encountered engine troubles later on, tried to fix it with a new set of sparking plugs but failed.
Other pictured cars are Abarth 1300s. Note detached windscreen, has to be glued in.

Team Elite ahead of the snorkel car, and, what a grid!

Interesting to see what the Elans could do compared to the 47s

The best 47s 11th and 12th on the grid, Trevor Taylor in the white car a couple of tenths of a second faster than Miles at 1`40"2, the Lola T70´s and Piper`s Ferrari 275 LM with the late great Pedro Rodriguez lapping 1 second faster, the fastest Porsche 910 one second behind. Final result shows the 910 and the works Chevron BMW ahead though.

Photo of the second half of the grid just misses Rollinson\Nunn (Chevron BMW, 9`30"6), Taylor/Wagstaff (Lotus 47, 9`31"5, 25th of 76 starters), and Wangstre/ Cristofferson ( Ferrari Dino 206 SP, 9`31"9). Next 47 is the 11th on the photo, the car with the interesting air intake on the small picture (P.Jackson, 47GT-5). Jo Siffert (bottom) is going to win the race in the 908/3000 No2. Mr Bridges of the Bridges/Lepp-Chevron would not understand the Germayn announcements and is a little late. (Fastest Chevron BMW is Meek/Craft, 15th in practice at 9`15"3, most probably with 2000 ccm?, but under S homologation)

There was not the slightest chance to win or to play a substantial role in the race. Look at the the cars that competed there! Foto taken after Indianapolis start, 47 on the right side in BRG colours is P. Jackson´s. Victor Walker is also seen on the far left. A Nordschleife lap could be performed at 9`43"5 in a 47. The Abarths reached 9`10", whereas J.Lepp in his Chevron B8 got down to 9`31"7. The era of " workman´s" racing cars had ended.
